GHD are the best straightening irons, for all types of hair. They're expensive but they are worth it.

I didn't think I'd ever find anything to help with mine. I would wear a hat or pull it up every day cuz it was such a pain. I finally went and bought a hair straightening iron and I love the thing. I highly recommend getting one. The one I got was only like $15.

Large GHDs! They are a bit pricey, (I think you can get them off Ebay for around 70 quid), but they are the best.

A lot of black people buy perms, put it in their hair, only instead of using rods, comb it through to straighten the hair. They follow the same steps for perming, only without the curling rods. This lasts as long as any perm does, depending on how fast your hair grows. It's less damaging than using a hot iron every day.

BEWARE of the flat iron. It's okay to use once in a while but it can cause damage with all that direct heat on your hair. My mane is very long and as a Puertorican I have naturally curly hair. Everyone compliments it all the time, but many are unaware how much time and care I put into it. Once in great while I like to switch and go for that straight look so the healthy choice is to wash your hair, put it in big, big rollers and sit under a dryer hood for some time. Once hair is dry, have it wrapped around the head and secured with pins. A few hours later take the hair down and then switch the direction in which your hair is wrapped around the head. When your ready to leave it down, rub a bit of hair serum or shine product into the mane and tadaa!

One of the best straightners are CHIs they are pretty expensive, but the work great. Whatever straightner you decide to go with though you need to do it in sections. pull all but the bottom layer in clips and straighten that part and just do it layer by layer and its more efficent. Also if you use shampoos and cond. that are made for people who straighten their hair (such as Sleek by Matrix) it will help and will also keep your hair helthy.

my hairdresser uses a CHI flat iron and as someone else said, it is pretty expensive. if you can't afford one of those, you can buy a cheaper one, around $20 maybe, but make sure it is ceramic because those are less damaging to your hair.
