What you should do is when you put on the conditioner, comb it out in the shower. When I had long hair I always got knots right in the back of my hair, I would sit for ages sitting there crying trying to get it out and loosing alot of hair, my friend told me to comb it out in the shower and it worked. Before that I had to get the knots CUT out.
After you put on the conditioner and get out, keep your hair up in a towel as long as you can. If you blow dry, keep brushing with a big brush the entire time.

It is also helpful to comb the tangles out just after you put your normal conditioner in your hair in the shower. The hair is slick enough then that the comb will glide through to the ends. Another good idea is to start combing the hair at the ends, and work your way up to the scalp. I tend to get irritated and yank through my tangles, but you really need to have patience and work through the tangles. If you get to a really big knot, pick through it with your fingers. But i definitely recommend the wide tooth comb, especially if your hair is curly or wavy.

I don't use conditioner to detangle, because it's not very effective for my hair-type. But I find that Queen Helene's Jojoba Hot Oil treatment helps to detangle. I only use it once a week though.
For daily detangling, I put my hair in 2-strand twists, wash it, then while my hair is still damp, I untangle the twists, then detangle my hair. That is the best method for detangling really thick hair. It works 100% of the time for me.
