Your hair sounds gorgeous as it is, any dye job/highlights is going to be really hard work.
For highlights, you're going to have to bleach the hell out the hair. You'll have to strip the natural colour completely then put the colour you want back in. The colour alone will be major upkeep, not to mention the conditioning treatments you'll need after all the bleach work.
You can just bleach the hair lighter, but I'm your 'natural' bleach out colours will be shades of orange.
As for lowlighting (highlighting with darker shades, usually reds), the effects aren't great on curly hair. You don't the effects you so on straight hair. The colours are lost in the curl spirals and it ends up looking a bit stripey %26amp; patchy.
If you're hell bent on changing the colour I'd really recommend going to salon and having a temporary (vegetable) dye run through (this could only be a darker colour as it wouldn't involve bleaching). If you like it you can commit to permanet later, if you don't there's no harm done.
As a fellow dark dark brown, thick %26amp; curly haired person I've tried just about every colour change going. None looked as good as the natural colour style. Don't let boredom drive you to changing a good thing!
You're far more gorgeous than those flat ironed blonde clones that turn up everywhere!

Since your hair is dark I would go for highlights because the up keep will be much less.
I would choose a color that is no more than 4 shades lighter than your natural color for the same reason up keep. Who has the time ( or the money) to do hair every 4 weeks. Highlights will only need to be done 3-4 times a year whereas all over color needs to be touched up 10 times a year.

It doesn't take much to really change things up with your hair. You can get a partial foil at a good price and if you don't like it you can change it easily.I do not recommend doing your own hair if you want highlights.A partial foil should run no more than 60.00 and as low as 25.00.Remember it is not what you pay but the stylist doing it.Ask how long they have had there license and what is there favorite part about doing hair.Ask before you tell them what you want. You would like to hear 3 years with color as there favorit thing for 40.00.You will get what you want and the stylist will be helpful.I often tell them what I am looking for and then ask them to do what is best. They are the expert.
